About the Artwork:
“Recital is part of a body of work that investigates girlhood, conformity, gendered socialization, and institutional spaces. I’m interested in the ways that we group ourselves together, respond to social pressures, and perform our identities for others. Each girl in Recital is reacting differently to the situation in which she finds herself: one brushes her hair, another sits bored or impatient, another turns her back on the whole affair. A dancing girl sneaks a look at her peer, unsure if she’s doing the steps correctly. Each girl responds to their shared environment in individual ways, regardless of the matching costumes that visually unify and divide them.” – Zoe Hawk
