About the Artwork:

“Repotting plants is my yearly spring routine. When I pull them from the old pots I can see how strongly and densely their roots have grown in the past year, however in this transferring process, some of the roots will certainly die. While some plants adapt quickly to their new environment and grow vigorously, some just don’t. They seem to have stopped growing. Observing them gives me an idea how closely they resemble humans in certain situations and hardship.

This painting is the narration of my own feelings as an immigrant. It takes time to grow new roots. It may take years and years being deprived, struggling to grow a single leaf, but it will come, the day our trees grow robustly with deep roots.” – Phuong Nguyen

About the Artist:

Phuong Nguyen (aka Jacquell) is a Vietnamese self-taught painter originally from Saigon, Vietnam and currently living in Bologna, Italy.

Her works focus on feminine beauty and she works mainly with watercolor with a keen dedication for details and delicate brush strokes. Set in a dark yet poetic world, Phuong’s artworks embrace her oriental origin, the harmony between human and nature and how such coexistence embodies certain subtle, clandestine message.
