About the Artwork:
“With this piece, I wanted to explore the motif of a pumpkin or jack-o’-lantern as a substitute human head. It is certainly a theme influenced by fictional characters such as The Headless Horseman from ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’, Jack Pumpkinhead from the Oz books, and by various images of creepy scarecrows. In addition to these well known types of characters, I was thinking about ancient vegetative deities, nature spirits, and our relationship with landscape. I am also interested in the human impulse to anthropomorphize or to ascribe supernatural qualities to objects or non-human living things.” – Sarah Boyce
