About the Artwork:
“Hamsa hands pointing to the sky ward against the evils around us, and the watchful eye ensures our safety as we pass through life. The peony rests fully opened in a garden of hearty snake plants and cactus, which protect it as it grows. Tradescantia leaves float idly above, ready for the journey and filled with the energy of the monarch’s wings, which beat to propel us onwards.
The reason I chose this surface – a unique, hand-cut, wood piece of my own design – comes from the desire to provide something fully created from scratch. My father and I cut, sand, and prime these substrates together in my childhood home, and each piece is individually drawn, extracted, and carefully planned. No two surfaces are the same.” – Samantha DeCarlo
About the Artist:
(Artist Bio)
Chicago based painter Samantha DeCarlo explores the world of magical realism defined as “painting in a meticulously realistic style of fantastic images.” Plants, flowers, bugs, and birds often appear in DeCarlo’s work, and she is constantly inspired by natural textures. Nearly always painting larger than life, DeCarlo zooms in on tiny details to boost her realism.
DeCarlo works mainly in oil paint on wood, and she occasionally experiments with spray paint, acrylic medium, and unusual paint application methods.
