About the Artwork:

“A painting about the nocturnal world. Mostly hidden from human eyes, much of the natural world is awake and active as the sun goes down or even in total darkness. Night blooming flowers open up and animals thrive. The flowers depicted in this piece are a tropical white morning glory, also known as moonflower or moon vine. They open after dark and are pollinated by night-flying moths and bats.

Night and sleep may be symbolically linked with death, the unconscious mind, or even with a mythological underworld or spirit world. In this painting, I wanted to evoke the feeling of a dream landscape – a space filled with fragments of memory and elements of mystery, where any number of situations is possible. Showing the space between day and night, I was thinking of personal experience of the brief, transitional state between waking and sleeping, when images come into my mind like watching a film. I was also considering broader themes of contrasting characteristics, parallel realms, and hidden or secret information.” – Sarah Boyce
