About the Artwork:
Two Dark-eyed Juncos hang out in a poplar tree on a fall day. The leaves have turned and the canopy is abuzz with ladybugs. One of the birds playfully chases a small beetle, perhaps in search of a light snack.
The goal of these rich and detailed paintings is to awaken the viewer to a new experience with nature, to feel wonder and curiosity. I want them to understand that these creatures have their own stories unfolding in places we will never see, in ways we will never understand; that this wildlife with which we share habitat, exists in a different reality – a different dream. Their world is just as relevant as our own. These places, these realms, these dreams need protection and command respect. – Dave Todaro
About the Artist:
(Artist Bio)
Dave Todaro (b.1978) is a surreal wildlife painter working out of his studio in the heart of the Mile-End district of Montreal. In his paintings, animals act in unexpected ways and draw attention to a scene unfolding in a recognizable, yet secret environment. We are invited to witness intimate moments – moments of tension, serenity and belonging; to experience a surreal glimpse into worlds too hidden and intimate to come across in everyday life.
Dave has been navigating the art world for the past 15 years as a commercial artist, designer, art educator, muralist, and as an art director. All the while, Dave has kept a painting practice, exhibiting in galleries and collaborating with other artists from around the world.
