About the Artwork:
This piece was an experiment in mixing media, and playing with graphite in a more painterly way. The gold paint was a challenge to work with, as well as photograph!
The imagery of submerged heads reappears in my work periodically, as there’s something organic, mysterious and tempting about what we *don’t* see, as much as what we do. Water, as an allegory, can be both engulfing and comforting, destructive and life-giving. The coming and going of the tides, the cycles of the seasons. I often dream of water. – Christine Griffin
About the Artist:
(Artist Bio)
Christine enjoys creating quietly weird images, flavored by mystery, goth-folk and myth. Raised in West Virginia and currently living in central Ohio, she gravitates toward genre subjects—modern fantasy, speculative fiction and light horror—especially those familiar monsters that live under, and sometimes in, our own beds.
She earned a master’s degree in painting from George Washington University in our nation’s capital, but is currently exploring all the ways to manipulate graphite and dry media over thin washes of iridescent watercolor … soft, laborious gradations atop a gentle sheen. The interplay between humanity, nature and power is a beloved motif, and she never gets tired of drawing clouds or strange eyes. She also works digitally on book covers and private commissions, and successfully held her first public solo show at The Blockfort Gallery in Columbus, Ohio. Her life is shared with one husband, three sons, and a punk-ass cat.
