About the Artwork:
It was a late May evening when I found myself in front of that girl. She was very handsome, red hair, not very tall, and a strange scar on her
left hand.
By now I was a master in this occupation and it happened that I received visits more and more often.
– Come on in – I said.
The girl was silent, her eyes low. Like any person who crossed that threshold she was obviously desperate.
-What’s your name? – I asked her.
– You don’t need to know my name, I’m here to play – she replied.
I looked at her. Her eyes were raised and she stared at me, her mouth trembling almost imperceptibly. It was really beautiful, a pity that such a girl had come to the point of sitting at my table to try her luck.
– Very well – I said – You’re right. I also hate these pleasantries.
And as I nailed my pupils to her, I asked:
– How many points? –
– All I have –
– Are you sure? –
– Yes –
-Perfect. Write it down here.
Hand her a wrinkled notebook. The girl weighed it with her gaze for a few moments then took it between her fingers, opened it and began to write with a delightful calligraphy.
A real shame indeed, I thought to myself.
The girl closed her notebook and slid it to the center of the table. I could better observe his scar; a clean and long cut in the middle of the hand, probably from many years ago.
I read what he had written. All his hope hidden among the twists of those elegant signs. I closed the notebook.
-Very good. Let’s start. – I said.
I looked at her again in the eyes, barely smiling. She didn’t notice. As I said, I had become a master of this strange game. People came and went, every day, for years now. And in the end it is the case that decides everything, luck or stars. I’m just deciding whether the bet has been won… or not?
