About the Artwork:

In my work I tend to explore and play with the idea of birds having some kind of power over my female subjects. In this piece I was inspired by the recent trend of people wearing Ratatouille rat hair clips. I wanted to take this light-hearted idea and twist it to be a little darker. To have the bird gripping her hair and guiding her as if she is possessed. The custom shaped panel acts as a fiery portal into this strange world. – Heidi Lustig

About the Artist:

(Artist Bio)

Heidi Lustig is an Australian artist known by her pseudonym Violet Portrayal. She conjures worlds that are softly strange, weaving ethereal portraits that hover between reality and reverie. Her largely graphite and oil work explores themes such as loss, sacrifice, fertility, and surrender.

Heidi’s technique involves meticulously drawing graphite faces onto birch wood panels, which are then sealed to preserve their delicate detail. She then oil paints around these ghostly figures, creating a captivating contrast between the muted, ethereal faces and the rich hues of the surrounding elements. This interplay accentuates the haunting allure of her subjects and invites viewers to explore the emotional depth embedded within each portrait.
