About the Artwork:

Renowned in Native American mythology as the seasonal zodiac running parallel with Aries, the Peregrine (or falcon) is bold, courageous, and soars amongst the sun and stars.

In 2017, breast cancer left me sideswiped, but with a quick revival. In 2023, ovarian cancer left me completely lost and dismal, not knowing how to move forward. But after a period of time, I wanted to express my mental and physical changes by creating a self-portrait through the guise of the falcon. With Aries being my Zodiac, the connection felt right towards this approach, and metaphorically synchronized through my personal experiences.

My piece “Peregrine” reflects transformation, with the falcon representing the ability to reach for new heights and forever looking-forward, surrounded by the prospects of explosive light and a burst of feathers. I love depicting women in my paintings alongside their spiritual animal counterparts, and this piece definitely visited a new creative space that I enjoyed taking part in. – Abigail Braman
