“The red crested tree rat is an animal that was thought to be extinct for over 100 years. In 2011, there was a sighting of one of these rats at night in Colombia. I painted one surrounded by violets, nestled in the dark.” – Niky Motekallem

About the Artist:

Niky Motekallem is an Iranian-American illustrator who depicts flora and fauna. They use intricate lines and bright colors inspired by their Persian roots to depict natural life. When they aren’t working in the studio, Niky is figure skating, brewing a decadent cup of tea, meandering in antique shops for inspiration, on hikes with plant identification guides, or crying over an anime episode.
