About the Artwork:
“DISLOCATION and DISPLACE examine how plants and animals are taken out of their original environment or shifted and compressed to smaller spaces. Humans shift, move, and dislocate different species to suit their needs and wants. We remove, change, and alter their spaces to make them our own. I am also thinking about how those species then relate to each other in their new contexts. I was inspired by recent images of wildfires for these drawings as well. They can be physical manifestations of our effect on the world. My choices in species often have a personal connection. Either through observations of my own home or personal memories. I’m not just thinking about how we as a species relate to these plants and animals, but how I personally do as well.” – Jessica Tenbusch
About the Artist:
(Artist Bio)
Jessica Tenbusch is inspired by the animal and plant species that live near and with humans as well as those species that humans exploit. She creates work that examines these complex relationships and how those relationships shape her as a human animal. Her work is an observation on our role as ecosystem builders and destroyers. These works are fragments of our daily environment, showing just how close nature is in our everyday lives, embedded in our homes and neighborhoods. She takes snippets of different plants and animals to create pocket universes for the artifacts of our built ecosystems to exist. In her childhood, she shared her home with a multitude of other animals and hundreds of houseplants. Outside was always inside.
Jessica received her BFA in 2011 and MFA in 2014 from Eastern Michigan University where she concentrated in metalsmithing and drawing. In addition to exhibiting her work nationally, she is active in the local arts community curating shows and coordinating events. Her work has been featured in Create! Magazine, and on Booooooom, Candyfloss Magazine, and The Jealous Curator. She lives and works in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
