“This piece continues my ongoing fascination with birds, perennially my favorite subject. I often place my animal subjects in visual settings that evoke religious iconography and/or illuminated manuscripts. The crowned crane, as its name suggests, sports a golden halo giving it an intrinsically regal or (even divine) appearance.” – Maryann Held

Maryann Held is a Philadelphia area based illustrator and maker. Her work combines the beautiful and the macabre, featuring intricate, folk-art inspired motifs and meticulously rendered subjects. The imagery she explores is surreal and contemporary, pairing flat, graphic designs with central animal figures that are deeply rendered and lifelike.
