About the Artwork:
“About the endangered Kagu (Rhynochetos jubatus)
An almost flightless ground dwelling bird endemic to the dense mountain forests of New Caledonia, the Kagu is also called the “ghost of the forest”. Population 1,500-3,000. The Kagu produces a unique powder down, a specialized type of feather which disintegrates into particles: this powder helps to keep the bird dry and insulated in New Caledonia’s tropical climate. They were highly sought after for pets and the lucrative plume trade during the early 1900s. Kagu habitat has been degraded by foraging and rooting behavior of invasive species of deer, pigs and cows. The loss of leaf litter due to these introduced species means large areas of bare soil that leave the birds with no suitable areas for foraging or nesting. In addition, areas of habitat have been lost to mining, and logging has aided access to Kagu by hunters and dogs.” – Alexis Trice
