About the Artwork:
“This piece is full of personal symbols, the fox, the bleeding knees, the city and the shoes. It represents is a mix of circumstances, visions and dreams, but the message can change depending upon who is viewing it. I named it The Master because in my artwork the fox plays the role of the master, the conscious nocturnal being that watches, judges and owns the other characters in the artwork.” – Elia Mervi
About the Artist:
I grew up in Madrid where ten years ago I cursed Illustration studies and graduated with honors. Then I made the decision to work on my own, to be a freelance. Since then I have been living in different places in Europe, The Hague, Lisbon, Sintra and currently Castres, France.
I have worked in many international projects for different companies, most of them in the United States. For six years I have collaborated with HBO in GOT, I have designed many album covers and poster films, magazine illustrations, mural art. In 2014 I was finalist in the Young Illustrator Award with my feminist project Quiet Resilience which was exhibited in Berlin. In 2016 I was the co-founder of the cultural space Casarao da Lua in Sintra and I worked there as art director for two years.
This year the publisher Nørdica Libros published my first illustrated book ‘Preferiría ser amada’ an intimate book about Emily Dickinson’s letters and poems. Also I just have finished my first graphic novel for a dutch publisher. Now I am principally focused on editorial projects, illustrated books and comics.
In my personal artwork I’m really inspired by parallel worlds, layers through dimensions, dreams, the unconscious way our mind can take, hidden messages in the daily life. All I draw has a very personal view telling like a tale or story. I like to create situations and express feelings that could come from the world of the dreams.
My personal life and relationships are very linked with all I illustrate but the tales and stories I read play an important role on my inspiration, whatever myths, tales from some culture or region or books I read. I’m always collecting stories, paragraphs, quotes that inspire me to create other stories.
