About the Artwork:

“In my healing process from grief, I used music to release emotions. With existential thoughts running through my head, I wondered what the point of this life is.

One song that really resonated with me was ‘Parabola’ by TOOL. The lyrics reflected how I was feeling and processing my thoughts.

‘Recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate this chance to be alive and breathing. This body holding me reminds me of my own mortality. Embrace this moment, remember, we are eternal, all this pain is an illusion.’

Embodying this moment of surrender, letting go, and remembering that life is a sacred gift lifted the heaviness of the grief I felt.

This isn’t a self portrait per se, rather an embodiment of what I felt through this process of grief and surrendering. Sort of a Memento Mori and being present in this moment.

I could go on in the heaviness, letting my grief seep into every aspect of my life. Or, I could go on with this new frame of mind, honoring her memory by creating something beautiful from it.” – Ashley Marie
