“A dark and ancient old god drinks the blood of his acolytes. Grown corpulent and sedentary, all that is left is the sweet savoring of suffering. A creature of little emotion, who bears the false promise of wealth and abundance to the damned below. They clamor and claw in vain to catch a drop of their life’s blood from his swelled and bursting corpse.” – Joe Keinberger
About the Artist:
(Artist Bio)
Joe Keinberger is a New England based artist currently living and working from his studio in Somerville, Massachusetts. His work is primarily influenced by folklore, mythology and demonology, as well as horror and weird fiction. Having grown up in New England, the rich, ghostly past of the area can be seen in his work and in the titles and imagined folklore that accompany them. Starting in his early twenties, he began cultivating a love for textural surfaces and loose, energetic lines that evolved into working primarily on wooden panels that can withstand heavy textural buildups as well as the scratching, gouging and sanding of the painted surface. The tangible, distressed quality of the finished product and the connection to the natural world that the wood holds has been a key factor in his choice of surfaces.
Joe has shown his work in a variety of locales starting in Boston and surrounding cities in the mid 1990’s, and since branching out to California, New York, Philadelphia and surrounding states in the Northeast. His work has been collected by patrons throughout the US, as well as in Canada, England, Brazil and Denmark. He has worked with Cadabra Records, providing album illustrations for spoken word vinyl editions of such classics as HP Lovecraft’s “The Dunwich Horror,” and Oscar Wilde’s “The Centerville Ghost,” as well as illustrating a limited edition collection of Halloween themed poems and short stories of his own called, “Macabria.” His sci fi/fantasy work has been commissioned by “The Order of the Thinned Veil,” “The Darker Corner Zine,” and “Deathwound Zine,” as well as a variety of heavy metal and experimental bands, such as “Appalling,” “Death is the Dream,” and “Cortez.” He was selected as one of the artists published in “All of Them Witches,” a coffee table art book released by Howl Books and curated by Peter H. Gilmore. Most recently he has exhibited a selection of his work spanning the last 5 years of his career at The Satanic Temple in Salem, Massachusetts, as well as exhibiting at the Providence Art Club for the biannual HP Lovecraft convention, “The NecronomiCon 2019”.
