Born in 1970, Francis Dooley grew up in Albuquerque, NM. Upon graduating High School in 1988, he enlisted in the US Navy Seabees, where he travelled the world. Francis served our country until October of 1991 when he received an honorable discharge and returned to Albuquerque, NM to be with his family. After visiting the Pacific Northwest, Francis and his family fell in love with the raw beauty of the region and made the decision to relocate to Washington State in 1999. Francis currently works and lives in the Bellingham, Washington area.
Creating art has been a part of Francis’s life since childhood. He began drawing and creating at a young age. His earliest memories are of drawing monsters, fantasy characters, futuristic vehicles, and cities. He often duplicated the art on book covers, movie posters, magazines, comics, and whatever else sparked his interests.
One summer, in his early teens, Francis watched the movie, Alien for the first time. The movie filled him with terror and wonder at the same time. Alien profoundly influenced the direction of Francis’ art and imagination, bringing to life his love for fantasy and the surreal. Francis is a modern symbolist/surrealist and fantasy artist.
He has love and fervor for the dark and the beautiful, finding the two often blend. He works primarily in acrylics and oils, using both airbrush, and traditional methods. Francis is greatly inspired by the works of H.R. Giger, Zdzislaw Beksinski, Rembrandt, Turner, Donato Giancola, Brom and the list goes on….
Francis purchased his first airbrush in 1990 and discovered a new and exciting way to express his thoughts and visions. He became hooked and has worked tirelessly to perfect his craft ever since. In 2000, Francis entered the automotive refinish industry and began to explore ways to express his creative visions by performing custom paint jobs on hot-rods while turning his clients dreams into reality. This skillset permeates his artwork today. Francis creates works on Canvas, Art Boards, ground metal, musical instruments, and when given the opportunity, motorcycles. He is the exclusive artist and graphic designer for D’Haitre Guitars.
In 2013, Francis decided to return to school to study another passion, Technical Design. This opened a new world of creativity, as well as a renewed perspective on his art. Diving into technical design and 3D design, has given Francis the exciting opportunity to explore a new medium, opening his eyes to a whole new world of art.
His journey continues….
