About the Artwork:
This piece was created as a reminiscence, in memory of one of the final warm days in late autumn. There is a point in every year, at least in our corner of the woods, where one doesn’t feel the warmth of the sun on their face again for some very long months. Most years that day passes without realizing; another day lost amid the shuffle, only perhaps realizing some weeks after the fact that it had silently passed. A deliberate effort was made this year to preserve that essence, like a dandelion wine, to be savored in the depths of the coldest nights. Down the road, once the warmth had returned, the piece would be a cautionary reminder, as to never take for granted that which is pleasant in the moment. As, all is forever fleeting.
I had been out with a friend on the water, which passed below an ancient, rusted rail trestle. We floated amidst fallen yellow leaves like gilded lily pads. Something about the hulking iron form looming overhead, not possible to see the whole of it at so near a distance, momentarily blotting out the warmth of the sun, imposed within me a sort of existential dread. The solstice had been months ago, every day shorter than the last, a fact I knew of course, though the reality of that nigh imperceptible unless you made the active effort to observe. Though, in those late summer days, that had not front of mind. The cold in that shadow felt deepened by that sudden realization, and passing once more through a pool of light, reminded me how quickly the warmth of that day would disappear. – Calvin Laituri
About the Artist:
(Artist Bio)
Laituri’s work is made up of delicate line work, built from a push and pull approach where ink is laid down on his clayboard medium, and carved out with sharpened tools, resulting in highly defined and meticulous strokes reminiscent of a historic wood engraving. Each drawing cultivates its monochromatic palette to emphasize the artist’s control of values, contrast, mood and narrative, as inspired by printmakers and artists of the past. This dichotomy of technique serves as an accentuation of the artists play on dualities throughout his work.
