About the Artwork:
Soon after fertilisation, a cluster of cells called a ‘morula’ forms via rapid cell division during the early stages of embryonic development. It’s a fleeting moment in each person’s history, easy to overlook, but worth a moment’s pause to wonder at the beauty of existing in such a simple and unstructured form for this little while.
About the Artist:
(Artist Bio)
Scarlette Baccini is a visual artist based in Melbourne, Australia. She began making schlock underground comics in the mid 2000s and producing music videos for her band Dear Plastic, before shifting her focus towards painting during the lockdowns in 2020. Her detailed paintings obsess over the human form, incorporating elements of body horror as per her earlier work.
Heavily influenced by her academic background in the biological sciences, Scarlette’s paintings are an expression of reverence for the living world. Through her unique approach with watercolour and gouache, she explores the euphoria and despair of being a human creature, how our bodies are both deeply personal but also universal, and other paradoxes of our natural existence.
