About the Artwork:
A subject matter that is both shocking and at the same time seems like the modern end of a through thread that goes back hundreds of years—like to the old Dutch vanitas or memento mori still lives where the lushness of life and beauty is juxtaposed with some imagery to remind us that life is short and death inevitable. The insects are both terrible and grimly beautiful and that creates a sophisticated tension that challenges the viewer. Tapping into a well of emotion the viewer feels the artist’s empathy for a creature most of us wouldn’t give a second thought to, thus creating a deep pathos and sympathy that is entirely unexpected. – Chil Mott
