About the Artwork:
“ODE TO BENGLIS” is a sculptural object made out of dried acrylic paint, in a manner pioneered by artist Lynda Benglis back in the 1960s, in which she made impressive sculptural forms and statements by pouring thickened layers of paint onto surfaces. I originally came across Lynda’s work about 7 years ago, while I was developing my Melting Man alter ego as a new series. At first, I had a knee jerk reaction, frustrated that another artist had already successfully invented forms that I had been experimenting with naively. But Linda’s work is so powerful and impressive, I quickly saw Benglis as a kindred spirit and distant mentor, fascinated by her fearless approach to art. My work often deals with the intersection of abstract and figurative work, trying to reshape amorphous forms into something surreal yet recognizable, but often trying to control the outcome. This experiment was an opportunity to let go a bit, and allow for the accidental and the unexpected.” – Jawsh Smyth
