About the Artwork:

“I had this cool antique frame that previously had an old photo in it so I think my brain was already on wanting to recreate a piece based on a sepia toned photo. I then came across a photo from the early 20th century of Eddy Spencer- I loved his confidence in the photo and thought he’s make a great otter. This was a fun one to figure out, the little arms and long body and neck of an otter were a great combo to work into a dapper suit and top hat.” – Cassandra Kim

About the Artist:

(Artist Statement)

Cassandra Kim is a contemporary artist whose paintings reflect a lifelong love of animals and traditional art. Inspired by the master painters of the past and she seeks to put her own slightly absurd surrealistic twist on art by replacing animals with people. She also has been teaching herself to restore reclaimed antique and vintage wood items to paint on or frame her painting in. She is a Virginia native and 2003 BFA Illustration graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University, and worked as a muralist and graphic artist for Trader Joes for 14 years. In 2013, the Klondike Gold Rush National Park and Chilkoot Historical Site awarded Cassandra with an artist residency. In 2018 Cassandra turned her focus to her personal art full-time. She has been in exhibits across the United States and internationally.
