About the Artwork:

“When starting this work I imagined an old sideboard full of collected memorabilia and curios that harness the stories of a life lived – trips taken, momentos exchanged, gifts received by present day loved ones and people almost forgotten. As the idea developed I wanted to paint a bust surrounded by curious objects and then settled on a modern day Dorothy the much loved heroine of one of the most iconic tales of all time, The Wizard of Oz. The bust of Dorothy features reminders of her friends the lion, the scarecrow and the tin man and all of the insecurities the plague us in lives and relationships. Not smart enough, not worthy of love, not brave enough. The birdie curio to the left and Dorothy’s headpiece a glaring reminder of our neediness at times, to be loved and never abandoned like objects on a sideboard.” – Sharon England
