“Hey non-white person that grew up in a predominantly white area. As a kid did you ever wish a magic genie could grant your wish and you’d wake up with blonde hair and blue eyes?
Careful what you wish for, boy.
As a kid in my all white 3 stoplight town in western New York state i wished I could be white, viewed as normal, that my appearance wouldn’t be the reason for my ridicule, that i could be viewed as a suitable/acceptable to date. Now I would not trade being Korean and Asian, for all the gold in the world. I wish that genie could have said:
Careful what you wish for, boy. Don’t wish yourself away, make it through these years and you will shine brighter gold.” – Jason Raish
About the Artist:
Jason is a freelance illustrator based in Brooklyn. He was born in Seoul, South Korea and went to the U.S. at the age of 3. After being raised in the forests of upstate New York he studied fine arts for 2 years at SUNY Albany, 1 year abroad at Yonsei University in Seoul South Korea, and then 4 years of illustration at the Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.) in NYC. He started a big adventure in 2008 and moved to Beijing just before the Olympics, not knowing when or if he’d be back. It turned into a 6 year adventure living in Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul, Barcelona, London, and Paris (in the 13eme arrondissement), all while freelancing with old and new clients from around the world. Now you can find him in Park Slope Brooklyn jogging around the park with his rescue husky, brewing beer, tending to his rooftop vegetable garden, taking photos, cooking, and of course, drawing. I secretly wish I could exchange my drawing talent for Jazz piano talent, or to be able to wail like Al Green.
