About the Artwork:
“I like to sketch in the early morning hours before the sun comes up. I find a lot of interesting ideas come about at that time of day. When I created this piece, “Night Blooms”, I had been on a visit two weeks earlier to the San Francisco Botanical Garden for a night time tour of the magnolia gardens. I did quite a few gouache studies of the flowers, and then, one early morning, this idea floated into my mind. I developed the quick sketch into a finished drawing on a warm acrylic primed illustration board using graphite and pencil.” – Julia Lundman
About the Artist:
(Artist Bio)
Julia Lundman is an artist in San Francisco creating paintings and drawings inspired by myth, folklore and fantasy. Her work is influenced by 19th century pre-Raphaelites artists, Victorian fantasy painters and a love of Medieval art and design. Painting in oil or acrylic, her process begins with sketching, developing ideas further on paper or canvas. Her technique moves from a detailed underpainting to glazed layers of color and refined detail, utilizing historic art traditions and often incorporating natural material collage like pressed flowers and leaves.
A graduate of the American Academy of Art in downtown Chicago in 1993, she was an active member of the historic Palette and Chisel Art League, contributing to art auctions, competitions, and a sold out two person show in 1996. Her professional career as a background painter at a traditional animation studio eventually brought her to San Francisco to work in the entertainment industry as a commercial artist. Her fine art work has been published in Infected by Art, volumes 8, 9 and 10, and Imagine FX magazine.
