About the Artwork:
“This piece continues my Projection/Relic series of works where I focus on linework, textures, and surreal permutations of the classic figure form. The title Projection stems from a recent focus on astral projection as a source of inspiration in moving outside of or beyond one’s corporeal self.
This series draws compositional and figurative inspiration from Italian painters of the 16th Century, while exploring ideas of dissociation and creation-through-destruction of form and self. Archaic religious imagery and form are paralleled in this series, although the divinity is viewed as originating from within the subject/self as opposed to an external deity.
Sensory perception, and specifically touch is another theme I explore in this series, often with hands and fingers interrupting the smooth textures of the figures, as they fumble for understanding of the unfamiliar figures.” – Peter Striffolino
