About the Artwork:
“This series of paintings on vintage fabrics, with floral imagery, follows the thread of ideas I’m exploring around the flowering of our full human potential. The flowering of our potential is interwoven with our creativity, our reason, our feeling, and our will. Different aspects of modern culture pull at the threads and compromise our flourishing. We are primed and encouraged to be uninformed and irrational consumers, selecting for what will capture and hold our attentions and not for what will develop our potential to be kind, considerate, and knowledgeable. As a response, I’d like to create something quiet, and subtle.” – Sean Mahan
About the Artist:
(Artist Bio)
Sean Mahan is a social realist figurative painter from Neptune Beach, Florida, who works with graphite and acrylic washes on wood to depict a sense of wonder about the innate warmth of the human character and its conflict with structures of power and control. Deeply interested in human nature, Mahan paints both sweet and sorrowful subjects in tension with the everyday objects of their lives, reflecting a sense of alienation. Yet, despite their isolation, a gentle and subtle warmth prevails.
In this series of paintings on vintage fabric, Mahan explores the beauty of the obsolete and the different ways in which we sever the threads to our past, for better or worse.
Sean has enjoyed creating cover artwork for the bands: Twelve Hour Turn, Floor, Daitro, Dauntless Elite, Planes Mistaken For Stars,The Gifthorse, La Peche, Low Pines, Between Two Waves, EardrumsPop and more.
