About the Artist:

(Artist Bio)

Mariajosé Gallardo graduated in Fine Arts in the speciality of Design and Engraving, at the University of Seville. In her twenty years of artistic trajectory, throughout her various projects, María José Gallardo has built her own plastic vocabulary. She has made her works easily recognisable as well as open to the interpretation of those who contemplate them. Representative emblems, symbols, religious, esoteric, heraldic, ex-votos or reliquaries are always present in her representative lexicon; offering the possibility of thinking about painting from parameters other than strictly plastic or aesthetic.

Fascinated by representations of power in a wide sense, and based on a profound study of history, and in particular that of painting, but also on an immersion in the high and low contemporary cultures (cinema, fashion, music, comics…), in her works emblems, symbols, religious and esoteric motifs, heraldry, votive offerings or reliquaries are always present, providing the possibility of thinking about painting from parameters other than strictly plaHer works are figurative, frontal, always full of blacks, gold and pastels; and her motifs are recognizable at first sight by all, but surrounded by a mystery that attracts: due to its baroque saturation that restores the pleasure of enjoying with the aesthetics and the cleanliness of her stroke, which, without seeking realism finds proximity and often irony.

Maríajosé Gallardo likes to study some forgotten legacies related to literature and the symbology of the past in order to mix them with some genres of painting where the symbol and the symbolic have roots. To all this she adds, in addition, the symbolic values of the still life or the human figure and even the paintings that document possible museum collections.

She lives and paints in Seville.
