About the Artwork:
“This piece was inspired by sound. My daughter plays in a symphonic band and I find myself as an audience member quite often. During the lead up to their performances, as they are warming up, every instrument plays independently and it is a wild chaotic sound. I love the confined disorder. The crashing percussion and melodic woodwind and bass brass, it feels so visual, if that makes any sense. I knew I just wanted to combine a bunch of plants that maybe wouldn’t normally be paired together but hopefully somehow make sense. Recently, I was visiting The Garfield Conservatory and came across the most insane silver palm tree, the Bismarckia nobilis. It’s character echoes the feeling of the percussion and I knew I wanted to include it in this piece. The graceful way the Black Peony Poppy ages and wilts feels melodic like a flute, and the Stromanthe leaves keep along the beat. I also included some of my favorite unusual plants like the Tolmie’s star tulip. I really enjoyed working on this piece. It may have to be the first in a series!” – Jen Lobo

I am pretty obsessed with plants and animals. I am forever interested in learning anything I can about natural science. I live and work on a small farm on a little freshwater island outside of Portland, Oregon with my family and a menagerie of animals.
