About the Artwork:
“The shape of some cactus flower petals have evolved a concave shape, to be a more reflective surface for echolocation. One Ecuadorian species of cactus grows large clumps of hair behind the flowers, and because the hair absorbs sound, it mutes the flower’s surroundings to create contrast and be more visible to bats. These cactus adaptations are specifically catered to bats, as hummingbirds and bees don’t echolocate, and it speaks to how interwoven and interdependent life on earth is. Earth Day occurred while this painting was in progress, and I wonder how fantastic and unfamiliar our world may look if we could see it through eyes other than our own.” – Sarah Finnigan
About the Artist:
(Artist Bio)
Sarah Finnigan is a Houston-based artist creating imaginative and often allegorical landscapes. Her inspiration is built on a youth spent getting lost in adventure games, exploring in the woods, and being captivated by astronomy and the night sky. She infuses her work with fantastical elements to spark curiosity and the desire to explore, and to inspire a sense of reverence, awe, and wonder that many experience when looking skyward on a dark, clear night.
Sarah’s work is achieved through a glazing technique to create luminous acrylic paintings.
