About the Artwork:
“The concept drawing of this painting was created during a time when I lost much of my mobility while suffering through a very painful leg injury. I couldn’t walk much at all, sitting was painful, daily life was agonizing. I had been dealing with this for well over a year already. I quit social media for about a month and went deep into my artwork to navigate the fear and frustrations I was feeling. I thought I might never walk normally or without pain ever again. I also put increasing emphasis on a consistent meditative practice. It became clear to me that if I wanted to get better, I not only had to deal with the physical aspects of my injury, but I also had to confront all the depression and self doubt that was consuming me because of it. When I finally did, I was able to get the medical help I needed, and I went through several weeks of physical therapy. Throughout this series of events, “Portal of Thoughts, Giver of Truth” was born. It is a portal entity that shows you, through symbols, what you need to confront in order to pass the portal into a new realm of understanding. The creature itself is composed of several bones of the human body fused together in creative ways. The center storm and wilted rose represent my journey through depression and injury in order to take better care of myself so that I can continue doing what I love: making art.” – Tania Pomales
About the Artist:
(Artist Bio)
NJ based Puerto Rican artist Tania Pomales specializes in dark and surreal works created primarily in oils. As a nod to her colorful and bold heritage, Pomales incorporates bright color palettes into her art in juxtaposition with darker motifs, such as skulls and human anatomical references, to explore themes of life and death and the cyclical nature of the human experience. The importance of mental health and deep self reflection are also fundamental themes in her body of work.
