About the Artwork:
“Drawing often feels much like I’m groping my way towards some true version of an image. The process of drawing and redrawing before committing to an image can feel like trying to look at something up close in a dream but realizing one’s eyes are glued shut by rheum. With scratchboard, the process of pulling forward the final image feels more like slowly brushing away layers of dirt obscuring an artifact found on an archaeological dig (sort of fitting, given that scratchboard itself is often thought of as a somewhat archaic way to draw). Eventually, you start to understand what’s there and where you can start to move more quickly but until the object really makes itself known, you have to move forward with care.” – Caroline Harrison
About the Artist:
(Artist Bio)
Caroline Harrison is an artist and illustrator living in New York. She works with musicians in the heavy and underground music scenes, including SunnO))), Pig Destroyer, Kool Keith, Inter Arma, KEN mode, Pyrrhon, and Yautja. She combines seemingly contradictory images to produce disquieting, chaotic work. Her drawings leverage the medium’s immediacy, its physicality, and its unusual relationship to our formational experiences with art. She loves the feel of a pen nib scratching paper, or a knife carving away layers of ink on a board.
