“Adopting imagery from the often dark and surreal animation of the early 1930’s, Rent’s Due Today! presents a playful, yet deceptively seductive scene. Jittery, indecisive marks and doodles populate negative space and energetically coexist with tight, resolved elements. Floating among a shallow space reminiscent of a stage set with props, a gravestone available for rent is presented to us by an anonymous, cheerful figure. Rent’s Due Today! toys with the constant worry and daily anxieties that plague us, while comically accentuating their ultimate futility.” – Lauren Genovese

Lauren Genovese (b. 1995, Westchester, NY) is a Baltimore-based artist and illustrator. She is a recent graduate of the Maryland Institute College Of Art, where she earned her BFA in painting with a concentration in illustration. Her creativity and stylistic sensibilities are fueled by vintage animation, cartoons, comics, and toys. Lusciously off-putting worlds are cheerfully assembled using acrylic paint and drawing materials. She is captivated by line work, playful colors, and unnerving forms.
