About the Artwork:
“This painting might be the first of a larger series about water. I’ve been considering various images and ways of approaching portraits in and above water and this piece was a helpful window into exploring this idea. My paintings are often disrupted, rearranged and reassembled. I’ve heard them described as torn or ripped and I like the way that these marks came about in this painting. The head above water is clumsily a reference to “keeping one’s head above water” and I like the simple image of it. I plan to develop a series which explores the themes around water and emerging as well as submerging into it.” – Zach Mendoza
