About the Artwork:
This painting is part of a series of paintings exploring themes of gender and the life cycle of bugs; transfiguration, metamorphosis, life, death and resurrection. The character is named Hel, taken from Norse mythology, where it is the name of the underworld and also the goddess presiding over it. In Norwegian “hel” can also mean (to be) whole, and the series depicts a non-binary character’s journey to becoming whole. This painting shows the character going through a metamorphosis, similar to a butterfly breaking out of its chrysalis.
About the Artist:
(Artist Bio)
Likrot is a Norwegian artist, their preferred medium being watercolour. By combining the matteness of watercolour with the sparkle of glitter and shine of metallic, Likrot’s paintings achieve another dimension that can only truly be experienced in real life. Always trying to see the beauty in darkness and things often considered ugly, Likrot’s work often plays with contrasts, such as between creepy and cute, dark and light.
