About the Artwork:
“This imagery in this painting is inspired by female nature deities related to trees or forests, from the dryads of Greek mythology to lesser known arboreal Madonnas seen in Northern Renaissance painting and Catholic shrines. I’ve included symbols of rebirth and decay as well as personal motifs that reference home and childhood. More specifically, I’m recalling an abandoned pear orchard next to the home where I grew up – a small patch of land that’s remained mostly untouched in an area filled to near capacity with suburban development. Its physical presence is relatively small, but the woods and orchard loom large in my memory and dreams.
This piece is part of a continuing body of work related to seasonal celebration, ancient vegetative deities, and transformation myths found throughout folklore.” – Sarah Boyce
