About the Artwork:
“This painting was inspired by an article by professor Tim Ingold, titled ‘Dreaming of dragons: on the imagination of real life’. Ingold’s work has always been a great source of inspiration for my work as an anthropologist and artist, and when the theme for this show, “The knowable unknown” was introduced to me, I thought that it all aligned perfectly. The article places our imaginative participation in a (more than human)-world at a centre stage, and explores how scientific inquiry can be reconciled with the sensibility of imagination and the knowledge that lies within these ways of being in the world. Based on this, the question that underlies this painting, is ‘What is the power of imagination in our everyday lives, and what new reality may unfold when we shed more light on the knowledge that lies within our sensible being in this world, both reinforced by and continuously reinforcing our perception of the world we inhabit? If we are collectively able to dream and imagine, are we capable of transforming the unknown into a new lived reality?” – Dewi Plass
About the Artist:
(Artist Bio)
Dewi Plass is a Dutch artist, born in 1990, with a fascination for nature, Disney movies and a love for all kinds of creative outlets, drawing in particular. Yet, she was very certain that she did not want to go to art school, and so she pursued an academic career in Cultural and Visual Anthropology from which she graduated in 2014. Although Dewi found great joy in putting her academic skills in to practice, there was that one other passion that had been left unexplored for quite a while: translating the intangible images and stories that she had in her mind into visible, tangible sensations that could be shared with others. This is why, in 2015, she decided to focus on her development as a full time visual artist. Since then her artwork has been shown in galleries across the world, both at home and abroad. Using acrylic as her medium, Dewi creates artworks in which animals take the center stage within worlds that invite the viewer to let go of all that’s familiar and instead explore the unexpected.
