About the Artwork:

“This piece started off as a doodle of a cartoon character I was trying to design, a small angel. Most of the characters I make are either a representation of myself, so that through drawing them I can better understand my emotions or an experience I’m going through, or they are made to bring me comfort and represent spiritual guides. This painting ended up being a mix of the two since the original angel character, painted in pink on the bottom left, is meant to embody hope and power, and something I could hold onto through constant change and confusion. While painting the more human version of the character in blue, they ended up feeling a lot more fragile than I initially wanted, but I realized that meant this figure was just becoming another reflection of myself. I tried making them look like a glass figure so you could see their inner thoughts and feelings represented by little trinkets floating throughout them, which added to the fragile nature of the piece.

When I first thought about what “undercurrents” meant to me, I imagined the thoughts, memories, and feelings that are always with us that affect the way we navigate the world. The stars and moon in this piece represent my religious upbringing and my spirituality affecting the way I understand things, the music notes are the way I’m constantly listening to music throughout the day and how that brings me comfort, pearls represent the way I make art to feel catharsis (pearls are created when oysters and mussels feel a parasite or irritant like sand enter their body to protect themselves, basically they’re made from stress), and the keys represent my frustration with my art and life, as if there is something more beautiful and powerful to be created if I only had the key to know how, and because I don’t, I feel trapped. Now that I see my painting finished, I realize that it feels a lot like my room. I’m living with my parents since I graduated college and my room hasn’t changed a lot since I was a kid. There’s toys and trinkets scattered between letters calling me in for jury duty and tax info, with my art supplies and multitude of in-progress paintings leaving me less and less room to move around comfortably. That’s what this painting makes me think of, being overwhelmed and confused but also recognizing the beauty and light all throughout a twisted world and also within myself.” – Angela Ramones
