About the Artwork:
“Self Sustained is a part of a continuing series where I encapsulate precious pieces of nature. The current and ongoing mass extinction crisis of our natural world has greatly affected the direction of my work and with so many species of plants and animals threatened with extinction, I wish to keep them safe in a bubble, away from harm.
So far, most of this series has focused on endangered species. Self Sustained is the first piece that has deviated from that theme. I’ve used non-threatened species as an example of what a future can be for their threatened cousins if we ease our pressures on their habitats and lives. It features an oriole simultaneously holding up an orchid while perched upon it. In this biosphere, the bird and orchid live together with mutual symbiosis.” – Jon Ching
