About the Artwork:
“I have had this idea for a while but it seemed like the right time to paint it since Gainsborough’s Blue Boy just temporarily returned to London after 100 years of being in America. X-ray scans show the presence of a dog in the underpainting. I like the idea of a distracted dog causing problems for the sitter so he was removed from the room. There is also evidence of a large round circle around the boy’s head, probably the hat he’s holding. I chose a costume mask. The background is a reference to the studio backdrops during the 19th century cabinet card photos. People would pose in front of a painted tarp with a loose representation of a landscape rendering.” – Jonathan Queen
