About the Artwork:

“By appearances both Henry and Tasmanian devils look rather unassuming, but history shows both are far from that. Tasmanian devils are the largest carnivorous marsupial and for its size has one of the most powerful bites of all mammals. For that reason, I thought one would be a good fit for this painting. On the scroll in the painting, I took a quote from Shakespeare’s Henry the 8th, “Be to yourself, as you would to your friend” and roughly translated that into latin. The vintage frame that this painting is in, I cleaned and repaired and while trying to maintain it’s aged appearance, I feel like it completes the painting.” – Cassandra Kim

About the Artist:

(Artist Statement)

Cassandra Kim is a new contemporary artist whose work centers around anthropomorphizing animals in portraits that are inspired by paintings of the past. With a lifelong love of animals and traditional art, she seeks to put a surrealistic twist on her own work. She is a Virginia native and 2003 BFA Illustration graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University. After graduation, she worked as a muralist and graphic artist for Trader Joe’s grocery stores for 15 years. In 2013, the Klondike Gold Rush National Park and Chilkoot Historical Site awarded Cassandra with an artist residency. In 2018, she turned her focus to her personal art. Her paintings are created in a realistic manner with acrylic and oil, and frames them using vintage or antique frames that she often restores herself. She is branching out into using reclaimed wood pieces. She has had solo shows in Richmond and Chicago and has shown in group exhibits across the United States and in the United Kingdom. Her studio is located in Richmond, Virginia.
