About the Artwork:
“Surprise was created using colored pencils on yellow paper. By building up the image using small strokes, the paper’s color is able to show through and create an interplay between the background and the colors added on top. This drawing began as a challenge to myself, to find a way of balancing a sinister subject with bright and cheerful colors. My aim was to create an image that plays with the tension between attraction and repulsion.” – Brian Britigan

Brian Britigan is a Brooklyn-based artist and illustrator. Born and raised in Iowa City, IA, he studied art and animation at the University of Washington in Seattle before earning his MFA in illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Whether created for gallery shows or publications, Brian’s work combines bold colors and compositions with a detail-driven approach. His images have been featured by The Stranger, The Portland Mercury, and The New York Times and have received recognition from Communication Arts, Spectrum, Creative Quarterly, and the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles.
