About the Artwork:

“I am always interested in placing something obviously obvious in a new context, by which I aim to question its taken-for-grantedness. It is exactly this that I tried to do in this painting, where the Little owl and its means of survival take the center stage. By placing a relatively smaller kind of owl in a royal setting I try to emphasize how majestic all creatures on this planet can be, no matter how ‘normal’ they may appear to us. Its food is kept safe and preserved in the delicate flowers of the magnolia tree, making this a packed lunch that only the most majestic creatures could dream of and showing us a glimpse of how intricate and fragile the means of survival can be.” – Dewi Plass

About the Artist:

(Artist Bio)

Dewi Plass is a Dutch artist, born in 1990, with a fascination for nature, Disney movies and a love for all kinds of creative outlets, drawing in particular. Yet, she was very certain that she did not want to go to art school, and so she pursued an academic career in Cultural and Visual Anthropology from which she graduated in 2014. Although Dewi found great joy in putting her academic skills in to practice, there was that one other passion that had been left unexplored for quite a while: translating the intangible images and stories that she had in her mind into visible, tangible sensations that could be shared with others. This is why, in 2015, she decided to focus on her development as a full time visual artist. Since then her artwork has been shown in galleries across the world, both at home and abroad. Using acrylic as her medium, Dewi creates artworks in which animals take the center stage within worlds that invite the viewer to let go of all that’s familiar and instead explore the unexpected.
