About the Artwork:

I read somewhere that aerodynamically a bee shouldn’t be able to fly, because proportionally its wings are too small to keep its body up in the air- but it flies anyway.

A month ago, my mother passed after fighting Waldenström disease (a rare type of blood cancer) for 13 years.

She lived twice as long as her initial diagnosis predicted.

She, and the bees, remind us that anything is possible, we can face the biggest difficulties in life despite our circumstances.

This piece is part of my ongoing cyborg animal series. – Kirsten Schaap
