About the Artwork:
“The theme of ‘Mother and Child’ is timeless. Though most closely identified as Christian imagery depicting baby Jesus and Mary, it is seen throughout history. My alternate take on Mother and Child depicts a darker turn of events, but she, nonetheless adores her offspring, no matter how demonic.” – Scott G. Brooks
About the Artist:
Scott G Brooks is a figurative artist living and working in Baltimore, Maryland. His art borders on the surreal and ranges from portraiture to complex narratives to whimsical studies. He is inspired by the people around him, as well as court portraits, historical events, religious scenes and art history. He incorporates historical content with current social, psychological, and political issues to create work caught between the past and the present. His work is described as uncompromising, twisted offbeat, sentimental, and disturbing. The narratives themselves may be simple, or even nonsensical, but drama and theater are included.
Humor is important in Scott’s work, both as a means to an end, and as an end in itself. It softens the blow of tragic circumstances, or creates a sense of irony. Humor draws people in, and can be an endearing quality in otherwise uncomfortable circumstances. The resulting juxtaposition of humor and tragedy often causes confusion and anger. Even in his darkest work, humor exists on some level, if only as a reminder not to take ourselves too seriously.
Scott began his art career painting murals while attending the University of Michigan. He graduated in 1983 with a degree in fine arts and graphic design. He resided in Washington, DC until moving to Baltimore in 2016. His work has been exhibited across the US and abroad, including the UK, Italy and Australia, and his work resides in collections internationally.
