About the Artwork:
“I first read the story of Prometheus, a giant Bristlecone pine, in Eric Rutkow ’s book American Canopy. This tree’s life was cut short in 1964 when a graduate student cut it down for research after his inability to retrieve a core sample. After dating, it was discovered he has cut down the oldest known non clonal organism on the earth, approximately 5,000 years old. Only its stump remains today.
I was thinking of the tragedy of this intentional felling of Prometheus. The image of this tree, one I’ve never seen, somehow is powerful in my mind. As I drew, I imagined this Prometheus growing slowly and flooding the landscape. What might it look like in some distant future?

Rachael Pease is an internationally exhibited landscape artist and envoy of nature. Rachael’s work documents real trees and locations. Her drawings weave reality with strings of fantasy, imagination and past memories.
Rachael earned her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania School of Art and Design. Born in the midwest USA, she has lived and worked coast to coast- NYC to LA. She is currently based in a new studio in the UK. Her work can be found in a variety of collections including The Dean (Swizz Beatz) Collection and The Resnick Collection.
