About the Artwork:

“Combining surreal imagery to achieve visual unease is a feature in my newest painting. ‘The Upstairs Room’ is layered with elements that invite the viewer to have a dialog with their perception and focus. Our character, cloaked in Perrot nostalgia, grins at mortality as the shallow veil of satirical ideology, textured foreground foreshadowing, attempts to disguise the horrors of reality by painting it with theatrics for the world stage. Just below the surface, the facade smiles through clinched teeth, silently embracing the crystal balls harbinger of our unavoidable demise. Go along to get along or be free from self-censoring.” – Matthew Dutton
