This piece is inspired by sultry adverts for phone sex hotlines of the 1990s. The endless 900 numbers of the era possessed a seductive veneer, covering up a seedy and far less glamorous reality. ‘Hot Local Singles’ portrays an anonymous model, too glossy to be real, just like the hotline she would have modeled for.

Grace Brooks is a Toronto-based painter whose work is a celebration of ferocious femmes. Her work seeks to immortalize the ineffable beauty and strength of femininity, while paying homage to the campy side of erotic subculture. Inspired by New Wave fashion, vintage glamour and archaic softcore magazines, her portraits are an exploration of our deepest desires and the beautiful paradox of fear and love hiding within.
