About the Artwork:
“Much of my adolescence and early adulthood was colored by what felt like an inescapable moral obligation to the wants & needs of my family. Any sort of individual pursuits or desires I sought to fulfill always came second, lest I disobey and risk what was tantamount to disgracing my entire lineage. While hindsight now offers a more nuanced perspective, I, at the time, couldn’t help but feel stifled, claustrophobic, even resentful. So naturally, at the first real chance I got to toe the line of rebellion, I floored it.
This piece is an homage to a particularly transformative time in my life (the summer of 2019) during which I voluntarily left my job and backpacked around the West Coast (much to my family’s chagrin). It serves as a reminder of the lessons I gleaned from the places I visited and the people I was fortunate to have met (many of whom I still communicate with). To revel in uncertainty, to make choices based on hope and not fear, and to, perhaps most importantly, enjoy the ride.” – Jerome Tiunayan
